Elbow braces, grip strength and decreasing pain.
Lateral epicondylitis can be very painful, sometimes debilitating especially if you are using your hands when you work or are involved in a sport that constantly irritates the muscles, tendons and attachments involved.
In this blog post I will go through an interesting study showing the immediate effects of using an elbow brace, compared to a placebo brace, in order to lessen the effects of epicondylitis.
Are elbow straps effective in treating tennis elbow ?
According to this study published in JOSPT in june 2009, Elbow braces do have a positive effect on pain and grip strength.
In this study there were fifty two people that participated, they were using an elbow strap orthosis, an elbow sleeve with strap orthosis and two sham contraptions.
The conclusion was that both the strap and the sleeve outperformed the sham treatment and since it is inexpensive to buy and fairly easy to use it is therefore safe to suggest that this should have a role in the rehab protocol of your tennis elbow.
If you can translate this data to medial epicondylitis or golfer's elbow is hard to say but my guess would be yes, why not try it.
